Meet Michael McEwen
A reporter at MPB since April 2023, Michael is a graduate of Florida International University in Miami, where he studied International Relations, Political Science and Geography with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. While there he was News Director of the student newspaper, PantherNOW, leading coverage on world news, university politics and investigations into Student Government corruption and finances. He was also nominated for 2022 College Journalist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists, Florida chapter.
As an intern and freelancer at WLRN, South Florida’s NPR station, he covered topics ranging from Everglades restoration, youth violence, migrant farm workers and the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in coastal Lee County. Prior to that he traveled to Managua, Nicaragua, researching indigenous land rights and the country’s post-revolutionary history.
Michael is a native of Florida’s lower Gulf Coast and an outdoor enthusiast. When not reporting he enjoys surfing, climbing mountains, paddling, and spending time with his dogs.
