"Reading to the Neighborhood" events feature all of the great things to do at our public libraries around the state. "Learning with the Neighborhood" events will take over community centers around Mississippi to connect families with resources and fun activities.
Showcase
Fred Rogers introduced the world to his neighborhood in the 60s, and public television exploded. In 1969, the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television went ‘on air’ as Mississippi Educational Television. Early years were focused on quality educational programming to serve Mississippians in even the most remote sites of our state. Just as Mr. Rogers, we committed to programming that reinforced the most basic American values exemplified – friendship, love and kindness; respect, acceptance, and affirmation; honesty, integrity, accountability, and service. These values have survived at MPB for almost 6 decades.
Promoting Literacy Across Mississippi
Reading to the Neighborhood is a collaboration of several state and local agencies created and initiated to publicly demonstrate the local and state partnership and support for literacy. Our partners consist of the Mississippi Library Commission, Mississippi Department of Education, local childcare providers and home school groups, city and county elected officials, public leaders, as well as community foundations. Our goal is to reach each area of our MPB tower network individually during the 2024 – 2025 school year. Schools participate in reading competitions and library visits, then student winners and local neighborhood leaders will read excerpts to promote strong readers!
Mississippi Children's Museum - Meridian - October 26, 2024 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
A Day of Fun and Learning
Learning with the Neighborhood events are designed to make learning fun and engaging. For each event, local and regional vendors display their resources, and MPB features supplemental teaching, learning, mentoring, and success strategies to support local children, families, and community members in growing strong and capable youth. MPB partners with a prominent local venue to provide the location, and we invite volunteers to participate!
-Early childhood resources for foundations in math, science and reading
-Family health resources to support physical and mental wellbeing
-Digital learning resources for multi-media engagement
As we “return” to the neighborhood, our goal is to “return” to infusing these values as well as give back through innovative, engaging, and high-quality programming. Find out more about our mission and upcoming events at mpbonline.org/learning.
