For a limited time, Mississippi Public Broadcasting is sharing a collection of original television programs titled MPB Classics. The shows document the local culture and history of Mississippi through literature, visual arts, folklore, music, storytellers and more.
Every month for the next three years, a new set of MPB Classics programs will be available free of charge on video.mpbonline.org for two months. Afterward, they will be accessible through MPB Passport for subscribers.
Visual Arts is February’s MPB Classics series and features:
The Mad Potter of Biloxi: George E. Ohr (1992) An hour-long exploration into the mind of George Ohr, a Mississippi native known for his eccentric ceramic pieces and his eccentric personality. His now-celebrated work was hardly appreciated throughout his lifetime, leading many to say he was at least a century ahead of his time.
Marie Hull: Her Changing Canvas (1992) Marie Hull could be called many things: an artist, a traveler, a teacher, a mentor, and an inspiration. Her many friends and contemporaries share anecdotes about her life and enduring legacy.
Dusti Bonge: The Life of an Artist Spend an afternoon with Dusti Bongé in her home studio. The acclaimed artist recounts episodes from her past, gives insight into her creative process and creates a stunning painting, all while living and reminiscing on her life as an artist.
Walter Anderson: The Islander (1977) Legendary artist Walter Anderson visited Horn Island on the Mississippi Gulf Coast numerous times throughout his life to find inspiration in the natural world. The film was shot on location on Horn Island and features James Best in the title role with narrations from Anderson’s daughter, Mary Anderson Stebly.
The January series titled Literary Giants featured William Faulkner: A Life on Paper (1979) and Richard Wright: Black Boy (1994). The Literary Giants releasewill be available online until the end of February before it is only available to MPB Passport subscribers.
