May 2021 MPB Classics series celebrates Eudora Welty’s work

JACKSON, Miss. – The Eudora Welty Collection is the title of the MPB Classics series for May 2021. This collection is a celebration of Welty’s contribution to American literature. 

MPB Classics is a collection of original television programs by Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The programs document the local culture and history of Mississippi through literature, visual arts, folklore, music, storytellers and more.

Every month for the next three years, a new set of MPB Classics programs will be available for free on-demand viewing at video.mpbonline.org for two months. Afterward, they will be accessible through MPB Passport for paid subscribers. 

The May 2021 MPB Classics series Eudora Welty Collection will be available for free on-demand viewing until July 31. The series includes the following: 

  • A Season of Dreams (1971)

Many of Eudora Welty’s most celebrated stories are brought to life, including The Robber Bridegroom, Lily Daw and the Three Ladies, The Petrified Man and more. This sampler of her work was originally performed at New Stage Theatre. This television version was Mississippi ETV’s (now MPB) very first in-house production.

  • A Conversation with Eudora Welty (1971) 

Author Eudora Welty speaks with Frank Hains about her introduction to writing, photography and Mississippi culture at large. She also gives an update on her then works-in-progress.

  • Postscripts: Eudora Welty (1984)

Eudora Welty is interviewed by Tom Spangler before the publication of her autobiographical book, One Writer’s Beginnings. She speaks on her unique method of writing, editing and revising and reads an excerpt from her story “Why I Live at the P.O.”
