Winter storm closes schools and vaccination sites in Mississippi, but shelters remain open

Significant accumulations of ice, sleet and snow have caused power outages, tree damage and made travel largely impossible and dangerous. Schools, government offices, and some businesses across Mississippi are closed due to a winter storm.

Entergy reports there are thousands of homes and businesses without power across the state. 
 

Emergency Shelter

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has several available shelters in the state for residents who need them. Masks are required, and the most up-to-date version of this list can be found at https://www.msema.org/news/shelters-safe-rooms-for-winter-weather-event/

 

Coronavirus Vaccine Appointments Rescheduled

The Mississippi Department of Health has closed all the state’s drive-thru testing and vaccination sites. All Vaccination appointments will be cancelled for Wednesday, Febrary 17, exceptfor those in Harrison, Jackson, Forrest and Jones Counties. Canceled appointments will be automatically rescheduled. Testing locations will also be closed on Wednesday at the Coulhoun, Copiah and Hinds (Farmers Market) locations. All patients have been advised to reschedule for a later date.The Hancock County testing site will remain open. 

All vaccination appointments scheduled for Monday, February 15 have been rescheduled for the times below.

  • Appointments at the Pike County site have been rescheduled to Thursday, February 18.
  • Appointments at the Hinds and Lowndes county sites have been rescheduled to Friday, February 19.
  • Appointments at the Forrest, Harrison, Jackson, Jones, Lauderdale, Lee, Madison, Neshoba, Rankin and Warren county sites have been rescheduled to Saturday, February 20.
  • Appointments at the De Soto, Lafayette, Leflore and Panola county sites have been rescheduled to Sunday, February 21.
     

All COVID-19 vaccination appointments for Tuesday, February 16 have been rescheduled except for the Coast Coliseum site in Harrison County. 

  • Harrison County: Mississippi Coast Coliseum, 2350 Beach Blvd, Biloxi will be open for appointments
  • Appointments at the Lawrence county vaccination site will be rescheduled for Thursday, February 18.
  • Appointments at the Lowndes and Madison county vaccination sites will be rescheduled for Saturday, February 20.
    Appointments at the Adams, Forrest, Hinds, Jones, Lauderdale, Lee, Neshoba, Pike, Rankin and Washington county vaccination sites will be rescheduled for Sunday, February 21.
  • Appointments at the De Soto, Lafayette and Leflore county vaccination sites will be rescheduled for Saturday, February 27.

 

All Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) offices except those in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, George, Greene, Perry, Forrest, Lamar, Wayne and Jones Counties will be closed on Wednesday, February 17. These details can change dependent on weather according to the Department of Health.
 

School Closures

The following schools will be closed Tuesday, February 16, however, some may require students to participate in virtual learning. These closures may also impact a school’s home food delivery program. To learn more visit the district’s website
