Nissan Workers at the Canton plant continue to cast their ballots for or against joining a union. As MPB's Desare Frazier reports, results of the two day election are expected by tonight.
Workers began voting over whether to join the United Auto Workers Union at 2 a.m., Thursday morning. About 4,000 of the companies 64-hundred employees are eligible to cast a ballot. Matthew Miracle has been with Nissan since 2011.
"How do you think you're going to vote?" said Frazier.
"No," said Miracle.
"Why?," said Frazier.
"It's union, UAW is a terrible thing. All it wants to take is the money. It's not going to help anybody. These employees, they have it made," said Miracle.
Lee Ruffin, a full-time employee, supports joining the UAW.
"I think righteous will prevail," said Ruffin.
"What's righteous for you?," said Frazier.
"Voting yes. I mean we need to have a seat at the table. I mean our pension has been frozen. We don't have a pension," said Ruffin.
Workers do have a 401-K plan. Employees who support joining the union say they want better pay and health benefits along with safer working conditions. Molisa Flowers is voting no.
"Good payment. Benefits are good. Everything. I've been here 15 years. No problem. If you come in here and do your job and work, you get paid," said Flowers.
Fred Diggs is heading inside to vote.
"I was off today and I'm just coming to cast my ballot yes or no and the way things been around here for me it's going to be yes," said Diggs.
The National Labor Relations Board is supervising the election which ends at 7 p.m. The UAW expects the results tonight. Nissan doesn't support unionizing the plant. Complaints by workers of threats and intimidation continue. Nissan says those claims are false. The NLRB will hold a hearing on the allegations.
