Saturday FBI agents arrested 19-year old Jaelyn Delshaun Young and 22- year old Mohammed Oda Dakhlalla, at the Golden Triangle Airport near Columbus. An FBI criminal complaint states the pair were on their way to Syria to join ISIS. Young and Dakhlalla are charged with attempting and conspiring to knowingly provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization. Yesterday a federal magistrate judge in Oxford, denied bond. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chad Lamar.
"It's my understanding that the evidence presented at the hearing was that the FBI discovered this through her open Twitter account," said Lamar.
FBI agents listed communications they had with the couple through social media. They thought they were interacting with ISIS rebels. Young and Dakhlalla, who are both U.S. citizens, expressed their desire to fight for the militant state. According to the FBI, Young was upset about the delay in getting their passports, but wrote she felt better after seeing news of the July attack against U.S. Marines in Tennessee. Attorney Dennis Harmon, a Dakhlalla family friend, says they are devastated.
"Ah, like getting hit between the eyes with a two-by-four and you're still shaking your head and blinking your eyes trying to clear your head, but the pain hasn't started yet. They still don't believe it I think fundamentally," said Harmon.
Harmon says Young and Dakhlalla were married in a muslim ceremony, but do not have a marriage license. Young was a sophomore studying chemistry at Mississippi State University. Dakhlalla graduated from Mississippi State in May, with a psychology degree.
The U.S. Attorney's Office doesn't release the dates of federal grand jury hearings, but says it will be soon.
