Officials are warning Mississippians about the possible hazards of outdoor grilling this holiday weekend. MPB's Ashley Norwood reports.

Grills and barbeques account for more than 8,000 fires each year in the U.S., according to the National Park Service. Fires can result in deaths, injuries, and property damage. Mississippi Fire Marshal Mike Chaney says number one on his list...

"Don't bring that propane and charcoal grill under the house or under the eave and catch a house on fire," said Chaney.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected across the state this weekend and Chaney advises Mississippians not to bring grills under carports or garages.

"Especially with a charcoal grill and someone puts too much charcoal lighter on and tries to light it and then somebody runs out and trips, you could get a child injured if you're not careful and they are by a grill," said Chaney.

Phil Lewis is with Blossman Gas and Appliances in Jackson. He advises gas grill users to safely check for leaks.

"If you ever smell any propane, then there's a leak somewhere. It's designed not to leak when you've got it hooked up correctly. So don't hit a striker and don't light a match if you're smelling propane," said Lewis

Experts say one of their biggest safety tips is to never walk away from the grill. Ashley Norwood, MPB News.
