Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson is questioning the recent air strikes by U-S military in Syria ordered by President Donald Trump. As MPB's Mark Rigsby reports, the Democratic representative says he would like the President to consult Congress when such action is taken.
Thompson says he hopes the President would allow Congress to debate any further military action in Syria. He questions the President's strategy on how to deal with the Syrian regime.
"If you are genually concerned about the Syrian children, and people of Syria who were gassed, is dropping bombs the way to go? Or, is it to rally our allies around the world in opposition to it."
Thompson says the air strikes did not cripple Syrian air forces, like they were intended. He says dealing with this situation takes stronger leadership.
"You can't beat up the school yard bully when you're president. You have to provide the mature leadership that being the President of the United States requires."
Thompson says the recent use of poison gas by Syria on civilians was absolutely wrong, but he offers words of caution as to America's role as protector in world conflicts.
"Are we now becoming the world policemen? Are we now getting our fighting forces drawn into another long and protracted war because the's something going on in a sovereign nation we don't like?"
Last week, Republican Senator Roger Wicker said he believes there will be bi-partisan support in Congress against the Syrian government.
