Mississippi schools can reopen with in-person classes, virtual learning or a combination of both. Many districts are opting for in-person classes and virtual learning. But, reopening schools as more counties are placed on tougher restrictions due to rising COVID 19 cases have some people worried. State Superintendent Carey Wright answered calls from listeners on a MPB radio program about reopening schools. Sacea, a Biloxi teacher and parent asked:

“What’s the number of deaths that the department of education and the governor are willing to accept as collateral damage for opening up schools traditionally? said Sacea.

“I don’t know if you’re aware but the National Association of Pediatricians as well as your local Mississippi chapter of pediatricians believe that returning to school in person is actually the best thing to do. Obviously with safety precautions. The Department of Education and the State Board of Education do not have the authority to dictate to districts their start date or whether it’s in-person or virtual,” said Wright.

Wright says the governor has the authority to delay the start date for all schools through an executive order. She says to keep students, teachers and staff safe they have provided all school districts with CDC guidelines and safety precautions from health department officials.

“We have been in constant contact with Dr. Dobbs and Dr. Byers so that we’re making sure our superintendents have the most up to date information regarding the health and safety of children and staff,” said Wright.

Wright says children with special needs who cannot attend school in-person should check with their child’s school about plans for virtual learning.
