37 names of those who died in the line of duty were read and honored at the event. Family members and fellow officers placed flowers on a large monument with photos of the deceased.

Keith Tartt of Grenada was present to honor his late brother, James Lee Tartt, who passed in 2016. Tartt says the memorial reminds him that the law enforcement agencies in the state are like "one big family."

"It really is a pleasure to know all of the tremendous men and women that are a part of what goes on to protect us, and the sacrifices that everybody is willing to give." he said. "I've got a son that's in law enforcement and he's in law enforcement because of what my brother has done."

House Speaker Phillip Gunn delivered the keynote address at the memorial. He said he related to those in the audience that were missing a loved one, telling the audience that he lost many of his family members in a car accident.

"Everybody who's here today knows what it's like to have that highway patrolman pull in your yard and tell you that your loved one has died." he said. "They draw strength from one another by being here."

This week is nationally recognized as "Police Week."
