Thousands of Mississippians are expected to hit the road this holiday weekend. Law enforcement will also be on the road to protect travelers.
Nearly 43 million Americans, including several thousand Mississippians, will travel this holiday weekend. That's according to the national travel firm AAA.
With several major highways crisscrossing the state, and the large influx of vehicles on the road, Mississippi Highway Patrol will also be stepping up their presence.
Captain Johnny Poulos is with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Last Thanksgiving the highway patrol investigated MHP investigated 221 crashes and four fatalities.
Poulus says officers will use checkpoints throughout the state to ensure safe driving.
While most travelers will be hitting the road, many will also be traveling by air. Officials with the Jackson Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport anticipate more than 22-thousand passengers over the next five days.
