Mississippi’s Republican leaders say Donald Trump’s Presidency will be a boon to the state.
GOP leaders and Trump Campaign officials are celebrating the results of Tuesday’s presidential election.
Trump handily defeated his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton by more than 200-thousand votes in Mississippi.
But what does the get the Magnolia State?
“I think the ear of the President,” says Governor Phil Bryant who campaigned on Trump’s behalf in several states including Florida, Louisiana and Pennsylvania.
“I think the ability to go directly into the Oval Office with the concerns that we have here in Mississippi. I think the very similarity between Donald Trump and Mississippi. How people have tried to define him. How they’ve tried to look at his imperfections as they have us, but where is he at now? He’s on his way to become President of the United States, and he understands Mississippi.”
In addition to the presidency, Republicans were able to retain control in both chambers of Congress.
“We’re not going to go and say ‘hey, you do this for us,” says 3rd District Representative Gregg Harper. “We just want a level playing field because we know we can sell Mississippi. We can sell our workforce and our quality of life here. We just want to have a shot is all, a fair shot.”
When asked about the possibility of a position in the Trump Administration, Governor Bryant says it would be difficult to reject an offer from the President-elect, but doubts he’ll be asked.
