Republican Candidates for Mississippi Treasurer are using two different approaches to garner support ahead of next week's primaries. Incumbent Lynn Fitch is hoping to rely on her record while her challenger claims she has mismanaged state funds.
Despite the heat, a large crowd gathered under the pavilion at Founder's Square to watch the final day of political speeches at this year's Neshoba County Fair.
Many candidates used the ten minutes allotted to them to explain to voters why they are the right choice on Election Day, but David McRae used his time to criticize incumbent Lynn Fitch.
McRae says Fitch has been irresponsible with the taxpayer’s money over the past four years.
"Why does she waste so much money on redecorating her office?" asks McRae. "Why did she wait until the newspapers threatened to sue her to finally publish the unclaimed property reports? Why did she shut down the state college savings program and mismanage it and make college more expensive for families in Mississippi? We deserve answers to every single one of those questions."
Fitch, however, ignored the attacks and chose instead to focus on her part in lowering the state's indebtedness and helping to educate Mississippi's young people on fiscal responsibility. She says she'll continue the upbeat nature of her work.
"My commitment to you is that I will continue to be your positive leader," Fitch says. "I will continue to have positive financial planning on your behalf. Going to positively run this office.
Party primaries will be held next Tuesday, August 4th. Polls open at 7 am and close at 7 pm.
