VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi city has received grants to clean up a former hospital property.
The Vicksburg Post reports (https://shar.es/1RIQkh ) the two grants totaling $400,000 that were presented to Vicksburg officials Monday morning should pave the way for demolition and redevelopment at Kuhn Hospital.
The grants are part of $2.89 million received to help with cleaning up nine Brownfield projects in Mississippi. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Brownfield Program provides grants and technical assistance to safely clean up and sustainably reuse contaminated properties.
Vicksburg's community development director Victor Gray-Lewis says city officials will meet with their environmental contractor to create a plan for using the EPA grants to remove any hazardous materials and demolition. He says they would like to repurpose the hospital property and that one laid-out scenario is residential development.
