Attorneys for the Jackson Women's Health Organization, the only abortion clinic in Mississippi, filed papers with the
Supreme Court to keep the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals's ruling in place. It blocks a state law that says every doctor working at the abortion clinic must have privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. No hospital would grant the privileges to the out-of-state physicians. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood is asking that the decision be overturned.
The legal volleys come as Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Civil Rights Icon Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, is in Mississippi to speak out against abortion. She's director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life. She told an audience of anti-abortion supporters she had two abortions in the 1970's, and would have had another one, but she spoke to her grandfather, Rev. Martin Luther King Senior.
"And he said they're lying to you. That's not a lump of flesh. That's my great grandchild. So, I have been redeemed from abortion and the harmful impact through prayer, through faith in God's forgiveness and God's Love." said King
King is expected to attend a church service staged outside of the Jackson clinic Friday afternoon.
The attorneys for the clinic argue that if it closes it will put an undue burden on a woman's right to an abortion.
