Beginning Monday, Mississippians can return to state department of motor vehicle offices to get the credentials they need. But Governor Tate Reeves says there are some temporary changes, such as extending conceal carry permits until the end of the year and renewing drivers licenses only online. And he says services will be provided on specific days according to the person's last name, except on Wednesdays.
"Monday will be last names starting with A-E, Tuesday last names started with F-L, Wednesday anybody can come, "Walk in Wednesday" is what we're going to call it. Thursday will be M-S and Friday will be with those last names that begin T-Z. said Reeves.
The DMV has been dogged by complaints about being understaffed with long tortuous lines. Reeves says now that the offices are reopening after the coronavirus shutdown, they want to reduce congestion and prevent the spread of Covid 19. In-coming Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell is managing the reopening.
"We will be operating with strict adherence to the recommended social distancing guidelines. We have plans and procedures in place for the operations of the driver's license services bureaus and stations, as well as nightly cleaning so that the next day when people come back the facilities will be cleaned," said Tindell.
Tindell says there are services that people must visit the DMV to handle such as student driver's license permits, sexual offender registrations and new I.D's. He says those who can put off going to an office for up to three weeks would help with overcrowding. Visit the department of motor vehicle website for more information.
