The Coronavirus Pandemic has people seeking help from mental health providers to cope with the emotional strain. As MPB’s Desare Frazier reports, talking about the issue experts say helps relieve pent-up feelings.

“Department of Mental Health. We offer resources across the state," said operator.

A 24 hour helpline is up and running at the Mississippi Department of Mental Health to direct people to resources for treatment and answer questions. Adam Moore is with the agency. He says in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, it’s important people know help is available.

"It's a good hub for people to call to find out what's near them. Also they can speak to people there about challenges they're experiencing. You know a lot of people are experiencing stress and anxiety over this. People are going to need to know how to cope, so they can speak to them about some of those challenges they're having as well," said Moore.

Moore says those with mental health disorders like depression and anxiety should continue their treatment if possible. Stephanie Smith-Jefferson is a therapist at Crossroads Counseling Center in Ridgeland. She says patients are practicing social distancing in her office. She also uses telemental health services-counseling people through video conferencing or online chatting. Smith-Jefferson advises people to talk honestly to their families about what they’re feeling.

"Talk about what it is you’re thinking, what you’re feeling, as you get them out. Acknowledge it from the other person, validate their thoughts, even if you don’t share them at least validate that they have these thoughts and fears and then discuss what they are whatever the feelings maybe," said Smith-Jefferson

Smith-Jefferson says prayer is helpful for some and to watch less TV coverage about the virus. She says do things within your control such as social distancing and hand hygiene. Smith-Jefferson says this is an uncertain time for everyone but stresses don’t stop living out of fear.
