NAACP head Derrick Johnson and Jackson's Democratic Mayor Chokwe Lumumba held a news conference Saturday morning in downtown Jackson before President Donald Trump’s visit to the two new museums. Johnson and Lumumba told almost 100 people that they kept their distance from Trump because of his "pompous disregard" for the values embodied by the civil rights movement.

Lumumba says the office of Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson and others will host another celebration at the civil rights museum in the near future.
Johnson, a Mississippian, charged that Trump opposes labor rights, education, healthcare and voting rights for all Americans. He says "We will never cede the stage to an individual who will fight against us.”
A group of Civil Rights Veterans joined the two on stage. Many of them participated in the civil rights demonstrations in Mississippi in the 1960s.
Dr. Amos Brown is a civil rights veteran and the president of the San Francisco chapter of the NAACP. He remembers his mentor Medgar Evers.
