Ripley is the next stop on Mississippi Roads. Featured on this episode are Holly Spring's historic restaurant Phillips Grocery and Clarksdale's Juke Joint Festival.
The Juke Joint Festival celebrates the rich blues history of the Delta as well as the performers who are continuing that legacy. Over 100 acts perform during the weekend long festival - all of which play nothing but the authentic blues born in Mississippi.
Phillips Grocery in Holly Springs is well known for its delicious burgers, vintage decor and its history. Former Confederate soldier and Union Army prison of war Oliver Wiggins built and opened Phillips Grocery in 1892. Until prohibition, Phillips Grocery was a saloon - in 1919 it became a grocery store. Phillips Grocery is located across from Holly Springs' train station, which General Ulysses S. Grant used as a supply depot until the Confederacy raided it. Not only does Phillips Grocery surround visitors with Civil War history, its atmosphere takes them back to a long gone era with its vintage Coca Cola memorabilia and antiques. Phillips Grocery favorites include their retro glass bottle soads, moon pies and, of course, burgers.
