Take a look at the life and work of an extraordinary Mississippi author. Three years before "To Kill a Mockingbird," Spencer authored one of the earliest novels recounting racial tension in the South, "The Voice at the Back Door." The novel was recommended for a 1957 Pulitzer Prize that was never awarded. Today, her works are considered among the most important pieces of literature from a female writer of her time.
