The Can I Kick it? 2016 Youth Media Summer Institute is a two-week program created to educate students in the area of production. In addition, it services to combat high dropout rates throughout the state of Mississippi. Throughout the course of the program, students will develop leadership, media production and writing skills that will help them develop their own documentaries and short films.
Part I of the first session began with an introduction to basic production techniques. Students also learned strategies that will help them develop a concept for their films. Guest Speaker, Prince Duren of MADDRAMA Performance Troupe, spoke to the students about the importance of self promotion, staying motivated and having discipline. Duren's troupe performed a skit to give them an example of how to apply the concepts to real life.
Finally, each group of students took to the stage to pitch three concepts and to share ideas. During the the final break-out session the students were seperated in classrooms and used the feedback to prepare for story development which is scheduled for Tuesday July 19.
