Secretary of State Eric Clark and leaders of Mississippi veterans’ organizations announced the kick off of the 2007 “Vote in Honor of a Veteran” effort to recognize the contributions of Mississippi veterans in preserving and protecting our American democracy. The program places emphasis on the direct connection between those citizens who have sacrificed while serving their country and the valuable right to vote.
Clark announced that stories of World War II veterans would be shared with Mississippi Public Broadcasting as part of its effort to gather these recollections in conjunction with “The War” documentary. In addition, these stories and all veteran stories will be forwarded to the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at the University of Southern Mississippi.
The Secretary of State’s Office began the program in 2003. Clark and former U.S. Congressman G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery made the initial announcement at Key Field Air National Guard Base in Meridian.
Of the approximately 236,338 Mississippi veterans, 5,960 Mississippians have died since World War I defending their country, and eighteen have won the Congressional Medal of Honor. More than 50 Mississippians have been killed in the War on Terror.
