Southern Expressions Season Two Schedule

Mississippi Public Broadcasting's "Southern Expressions" begins its second season of discussions with some of the area’s most interesting and talented artists

 

 

Lori K. Gordon – Super Chikan
Lori K. Gordon is a multi-talented artist who paints as well as she photographs and collages with found debris from Hurricane Katrina. James “Super Chikan” Johnson is a Clarksdale folk artist in the great bluesman tradition of the Delta.

Robin Whitfield – Don Jacobs

Robin Whitfield is watercolor artist who often uses a trusty kayak to get to her swampy locations. Don Jacobs often sees the big picture because as a muralist he uses entire walls as his canvas.

Jim Dollarhide
Jim Dollarhide is an award winning documentary filmmaker and director. His documentary on the life and career of BB King currently is making the rounds at film festivals across the country.

Two highly respected delta photographers with two highly distinctive artistic visions. This husband and wife team really click together.

Randy Hayes – Creative Crossroads
Born in Mississippi, photographer/painter Randy Hayes now lives in Seattle. But he calls Mississippi home and often returns to his childhood settings for inspiration. "Creative Crossroads" is a short locally produced documentary film by Tristan Wheelock, Win Graham, Sichendra Bista. It stars artists Marshall Bouldin, Rosalind Wilcox and John Ruskey.

Jason Bouldin – Sanders McNeal
Portrait artist Jason Bouldin followed in his famous father Marshall’s footsteps. But as an artist, the son also rises. Nationally recognized artist Sanders McNeal has a studio, but prefers to work plenair. Her landscapes and portraits expose Italy, Ireland, France and Mississippi.

Gary Walters – Andy Young

Jackson artist Gary Walters uses color like a boxer uses a right cross – as a bold and explosive punch. His water color paintings of the Delta are as striking as they are colorful. As an artist, Andy Young tries to be transparent. He uses light to bring out the rich color in his art work. Andy Young has been creating beautiful stained glass art for decades.

Painter Josh Hailey can’t keep still when he photographs his body of work. That’s because it keeps moving around. Hailey prefers people to canvas. Mathew Puckett doesn’t like to talk about his art. He’d rather be painting. But a lot of people are talking about Mathew Puckett, including a nationally prominent art critic and scholar.

When Delta native Gloria Norris was told to hit the road, she chose a familiar one. Norris took her camera back home to Mississippi and documented the colorful Highway 61. West Coast artist Susan Carter Hall calls Venice Beach home now, but she’s bringing Mississippi to California in more ways than one.

“Leif Anderson carries her famous father’s name with style, grace, poise and confidence,” says “Southern Expressions” host Ron Brown. “They are the same characteristics she uses while painting, drawing and of course, dancing.”

According to Anderson, she was inspired to free expression by her artist father Walter Anderson and encouraged to serious study by her writer mother, Agnes.
