Southern Expressions Season Two Schedule
Mississippi Public Broadcasting's "Southern Expressions" begins its second season of discussions with some of the area’s most interesting and talented artists
Show #1107 -- Gary Walters – Andy Young Nov. 19, 2009
Jackson artist Gary Walters uses color like a boxer uses a right cross – as a bold and explosive punch. His water color paintings of the Delta are as striking as they are colorful. As an artist, Andy Young tries to be transparent. He uses light to bring out the rich color in his art work. Andy Young has been creating beautiful stained glass art for decades.
Show #1108 -- Fletcher Cox – Rosalind Wilcox Nov. 26, 2009
Fletcher Cox has carved out a special niche as a Mississippi artist. He’s a master wood worker who turns furniture into works of art. Rosalind Wilcox is a quilter, painter and collage artist from the Delta. She also draws upon her heritage as a singing songwriting blues guitarist.
Show #1109 -- Ke Francis – Katherine Fields TBD
You can’t judge a book by it’s cover, and nobody knows that better than Ke Francis. A master printmaker, painter and sculptor, Ke Francis also writes, designs and illustrates his own books. Some observers have been known to call Katherine Fields’ artwork finger licking good. Maybe that’s because she sometimes uses chicken grease to create her thought provoking prints.
Show #1110 -- Josh Hailey – Mathew Puckett TBD
Painter Josh Hailey can’t keep still when he photographs his body of work. That’s because it keeps moving around. Hailey prefers people to canvas. Mathew Puckett doesn’t like to talk about his art. He’d rather be painting. But a lot of people are talking about Mathew Puckett, including a nationally prominent art critic and scholar.
Show #1111 -- Gloria Norris – Susan Carter Hall TBD
When Delta native Gloria Norris was told to hit the road, she chose a familiar one. Norris took her camera back home to Mississippi and documented the colorful Highway 51. West Coast artist Susan Carter Hall calls Venice Beach home now, but she’s bringing Mississippi to California in more ways than one.
Also scheduled to appear on Southern Expressions during the second season: Gary Walters – Andy Young, Fletcher Cox – Rosalind Wilcox, Ke Francis – Katherine Fields, Josh Hailey – Mathew Puckett, Gloria Norris – Susan Carter Hall, Leif Anderson.
Southern Expressions also will present a one-hour special show on the history of the Mississippi Craft Center. Interviews include Gov. Bill Waller, Dan Overly and George Barry.
“Southern Expressions” features artists each week who share tales about themselves and their work. Prior guests include encaustic artist Kat Fitzpatrick, photographer Jane Rule Burdine, painters Bill Dunlap, H.C. Porter, Dub Brock and Bebe Wolfe.
Oct. 8, 2009 Lori K. Gordon – Super Chikan
Lori K. Gordon is a multi-talented artist who paints as well as she photographs and collages with found debris from Hurricane Katrina. James “Super Chikan” Johnson is a Clarksdale folk artist in the great bluesman tradition of the Delta.
