Farm Subsidies At Risk

Mississippi farmers could be foreced to give up hundreds of millions of dollars in direct subsidies as part of a debt ceiling deal being worked out in Washington.

Republican Senator That Cochran said those who think such cuts would not have an effect on farmers and consumers are mistaken. Cochran is confident that, whatever happens, MIssissippi farmers will get by.

Republican Senator Roger Wicker said that, in times like these, all spending should be up for negotiation.

Jimmy Grant, a Mississippi Plantation Manager, says cutting subsidies could put many of the farmers who lease his land out of business. He tells MPB's Jeffrey Hess that Mississippi farmers have come to rely on farm subsidies.
