Jan. 20: Economy Still Feeble

Air date 01/20/12

State economist Dr. Darrin Webb briefed the legislature on Thursday on the state of Mississippi's economy. The state is slowly recovering but feeble, Webb says, and while Mississippi should meet its goals in revenue, there are still challenges ahead. Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and House Speaker Phillip Gunn also contribute their reflections on Webb's analysis.

Will charter schools come to Mississippi? Annie Gilbertson takes a look into why the state is one of only ten in the country without these experimental schools. She visits KIPP Delta, a branch of the well-known charter school brand just across the river in Arkansas. According to current legislation, schools that have been failing for three years will become eligible to be turned into charter schools in 2013, but KIPP is still wary of the state's tight restrictions.

With two big NFL playoff games on the horizon, Ezra Wall and Jay White chat about the games' Mississippi connections.

Also, Anita Modak-Truran joins Karen in the studio to critique the weekend box office: "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Artist," "Red Tails," and "Haywire."
