Friday, July 6: Beer Law

Air date 07/06/12

A new law allowing beers with higher alcohol content appears to be well received among beer drinkers in Mississippi. The law raises the allowable alcohol level from 5%-8% by weight. Butch Baily is president of the craft beer advocacy organization, Raise Your Pints. He talks to MPB's Jeffrey Hess about getting the new law passed, what it means for Mississippi, and what's next for Craft Beer enthusiasts.

Then, this weekend marks what would have been the 97th birthday of Mississippi writer, Margaret Walker. To celebrate, Jackson State University's Margaret Walker Center is hosting a concert featuring her poetry set to music. We're joined by Dr. Robby Luckett, the Center's director, and Randy Klein, the composer of the Margaret Walker Song Cycle. Klein talks about his first experience with Margaret Walker's work.

Also, Ronnie Dennis is a singer and songwriter from central Mississippi. His varied career has brought him to praise bands, youth groups, clubs and more. These days, he draws inspiration from his son, who has type-1 diabetes, and his wife, Shaunti. Ronnie tells MPB's Ezra Wall about his musical journey, and about a special concert to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Plus, Anita Modak-Truran is always kind enough to join us on Friday's to talk movies. Neither heat nor holidays could keep her from us this week.
