Fri, July 27: Sales Tax Holiday

Segment 1: Today begins the two-day sales tax holiday.  Shoppers can avoid Mississippi's 7% sales tax on certain shoes and clothing that cost less than $100 until midnight Saturday. Kathy Waterbury is with the Mississippi Department of Revenue. She gives Tax Holiday details to MPB's Jeffrey Hess.

Segment 2: Officials fighting the meth epidemic in Mississippi say the state is winning the battle. Marshall Fisher, Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics testified earlier this week before a U.S. House subcommittee on the state's success. Fisher points out, Mississippi has a law requiring a prescription for drugs containing pseudoephedrine, and that's cut operational meth labs down 93% in two years. Judge Kent McDaniel is a judge in Rankin County. He spoke with MPB's Daniel Cherry about the difference the new prescription law has made in his court.

Segment 3: The Summer Olympics begin in London today and athletes will be dazzling crowds with skills they’ve been practicing for years. They’re not the only ones. MPB’s Rhonda Miller reports two Mississippi chefs are going for the gold with grits, gator and gumbo.
