Wed. June 18: Foreclosure Prevention

Air date 07/18/12

Mississippi now has a Foreclosure Prevention Consortium to assist struggling homeowners. The group includes Money Management International, Mississippi Home Corporation, Mississippi Center for Justice, Mississippi Center for Legal Services, North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, and Mississippi's  Military Department. State Attorney General Jim Hood says these groups will provide a wealth of assistance for homeowners in or at risk of foreclosure. The consortium was created through funding from the national mortgage settlement with the nation's five largest mortgage providers in the wake of the housing crisis. Mississippi received about $13.5 million to prevent foreclosures and financial fraud.  Scott Spivey of the Mississippi Home Corporation, one of the partner organizations, joins us with more information.

Plus, the worst drought the US has seen in half a century is devastating crops across the nation. MPB's Daniel Cherry reports how that could set Mississippi farmers up for a very profitable year.

Then, a group of employees with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office is undergoing a new training program this week to teach them how to identify and deal with people with mental illness.  Eight deputies from several divisions in the Office are participating in the week long course known as Crisis Intervention Training. Dana Sims is with the Hinds County Sheriff's office and she joins us to give details about the program.

Today in sports: The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame is gearing up for their annual induction ceremony. This year marks the 50th class of sports Hall of Famers. It also marks the first since the passing of long-time executive director, Michael Rubenstein, whose name will be lent to a brand new award this year. MPB's Jay White spoke with the Hall's new executive director, Rick Cleveland, about what's going on. The Hall of Fame Weekend is July 27th and 28th. More information is available at
