Fri, Sept. 28: School Takeover

Air date 09/28/12

1 - The state of Mississippi is on the verge of taking over another school district. The state school board voted unanimously yesterday to declare a state of emergency at the Oktibbeha County School District, and appoint a conservator to run the troubled district.
Paula Vanderford with the department of education talked to us about the commission's decision.
James Covington is Superintendent of the Oktibbeha schools, a job he would be forced to leave under the state takeover. He says he's disappointed with the board's decision.

2 - A new report from the Civil Rights Project at UCLA shows schools are largely still segregated. MPB's Southern Education Desk Reporter, Annie Gilbertson speaks with the reports co-author Genevieve Siegel Hawley to discuss the factors that lead to inequitable education in the 21st Century South.

3 - Mississippi singer, songwriter and producer Mac McAnally will be back in his home state this weekend. He'll be performing with renowned harmonica giant Greg "Fingers" Taylor at this year's Wells Fest. Our Karen Brown had a chance to visit with Mac yesterday. He says of all his musical roles, songwriting is closest to his heart.
