Wed, Sept. 12: Isaac Cleanup

Air date 09/12/12

In the wake of Hurricane Isaac, state and local officials on the Gulf Coast are telling residents to be cautious with hazardous chemicals. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says materials like paint, kerosene and gasoline might have become contaminated during flooding. Robbie Wilbur is a spokesman for MDEQ. He tells MPB's Ezra Wall what people should do with hazardous household materials.

Three Mississippi schools have earned the status of national Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. These schools perform at high levels and show significant improvement in academic achievement. One of the schools is Pass Christian Middle School. MPB's Rhonda Miller spoke with Principal Joe Nelson, who talks about how his school became a success.
Congratulations to Saucier Elementary and West Lincoln Attendance Center in Brookhaven - they've also been named Blue Ribbon Schools by the US Department of Education.

It's two weeks into the college football season, and some of our Mississippi schools are already making a name for themselves, as MPB's Jay White tells Ezra Wall.
