Mon, Sept. 10: Jobs for Inmates

Air date 09/10/12

The Latest jobs report shows that U.S. employers added 96,000 jobs last month. The report also shows that the nations unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July. Here to help us put those numbers in perspective and give us an outlook for the job market in Mississippi is Dr. Patrick A Taylor. He's an  Associate Professor of Economics with the Else School of Management at Millsaps College in Jackson.

Also, women with criminal records fight to find jobs even when the economy is good. But high unemployment rates make finding a job that much harder. A new program by the Mississippi Department of Corrections lets inmates get educational and vocational diplomas. The program is aimed at helping them GET and KEEP jobs once they are released. Donald Pendergrast is Director of Education at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl.  He spoke to MPB's Jeffrey Hess about the value of educating inmates in the corrections system.
