Wed, August 8: Education in MS

Air date 08/08/12

1 - Two figures in national politics were talking education in Mississippi yesterday. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush spoke to Mississippi lawmakers about policy changes in the Sunshine State that might be lessons for Mississippi. Among the reforms touted by Governor Bush were charter schools, increased academic standards, and school choice vouchers.
Also in Jackson yesterday, the Reverend Jesse Jackson addressed a group of public school teachers. He talked about the challenges facing Mississippi's largest urban school district.

2 - Every society is made of a collection of different sub-cultures. So say filmmakers Greg Gandy, Vincent Chaney and Lauren Cioffi. They will spend the next three months traveling the state of Mississippi, looking for interesting stories of subcultures. The project is called Sub-Sippi. Gandy tells MPB's Ezra Wall how the idea started.

3 - Several athletes with Mississippi connections are making a splash at the summer Olympic Games in London. The state already boasts a silver medal, and several more athletes have yet to compete. MPB's Jay White gives the details to our Ezra Wall.
