Tue, August 7: Sagging Ban

Air date 08/07/12

1 - It was standing-room only at a hearing Monday morning on a proposal to ban saggy pants in Hinds County. County Supervisor Kenneth Stokes is behind the ban. He says it's an effort to help young people find work and improve their future.  The Hinds County board of supervisors will vote on a proposed county-wide ban on saggy pants at their next meeting later this month. The Mississippi A-C-L-U says a ban would be an unconstitutional violation of free speech and is promising to sue to stop the ban if the supervisors approve it. Joining us now from the Mississippi ACLU is Legal Director Bear Atwood.

2 - This month some Mississippi schools will be rated above average despite below average graduation rates. And, many are crying foul play. MPB's Southern Education Desk reporter, Annie Gilbertson, hosts a round table discussion about the change.

3 - One of the biggest issues facing the Mississippi legislature in the 2013 session is whether to participate in the medicaid expansion that comes with the Affordable Care Act. MPB's Daniel Cherry reports how one veteran lawmaker says expanding medicaid is in the state's best interest.  Rep. George Flaggs is also promising changes to the state's corrections system. The Vicksburg Democrat is chairman of the House Corrections Committee. He says inmates would be better off held at home and monitored electronically.
