Thursday, July 12: Abortion Update

Air date 07/12/12

A federal judge yesterday continued to block enforcement of a controversial state law that could shut down Mississippi's only abortion clinic. The law requires any doctor performing an abortion to be OB/GYN certified and have admitting privileges to a local hospital. The Women's Health Organization in Jackson says no hospitals have yet responded to applications for those privileges. Clinic owner Diane Durzis spoke with MPB's Daniel Cherry. Daniel also spoke with Amelia McGowan, Steve Aden, and Terri Herring about the Clinic.

Then, an animal shelter in Hattiesburg says they will start adoptions today of some of the dogs recovered from an alleged Stone County puppy mill. A total of 74 animals were recovered from the site that police say was run by a person known to sell puppies at flea markets in Alabama and Mississippi. Laura Hudson is with the Southern Pines Animal Shelter. She spoke to MPB's Jeffrey Hess.

Then, emergency officials are urging elderly or disabled residents to register for hurricane evacuation. MPB’s Rhonda Miller has more.

Plus, this week's Book Club takes us back to the Battle of Shiloh, and author Jeff Shaara's latest offering, Blaze of Glory. Shaara, who also wrote Gods and Generals, talks to our Karen Brown about following in the footsteps of his father, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Shaara.
