Friday, June 1: Doc Remembered

Air date 06/01/12

Residents across Mississippi are reporting calls and text messages from scammers claiming to be from their banks. When consumers return the call, they are asked to give up personal information like debit card expiration dates and numbers to validate their debit card. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood spoke with MPB's Daniel Cherry. After all the previous warnings about giving personal information over the phone, Hood talks about why these messages might be catching Mississippians off-guard.

Plus, tomorrow in Pascagoula the USS Mississippi will be commissioned for service in front of an expected crowd of over seven thousand people. The Mississippi is the newest Virginia-class submarine. We spoke with her commander, Captain John McGrath.

Then, Gulfport-native Brittney Reese is Mississippi's best shot at a medal at the London 2012 Summer Olympics that start in late July. A former Ole Miss track star, the 25-year old is one of the best long jumpers in American history, joining the ranks of Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Marion Jones. MPB's Sandra Knispel spoke with the four-time World Champion in Oxford where she trains every day at the university.

Also, famed singer and guitarist Doc Watson passed away earlier this week. MPB's Bill Ellison says that, in 20 years of hosting the radio show Grassroots, Doc has always played an important part.
