Friday, May 25: Safe Holiday

Air date 05/25/12

Segment 1: The Summer vacation season kicks off in earnest this weekend. Law enforcement will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers and those without seatbelts. But the extra traffic alone should be enough to make drivers cautious, according to Warren Strain of the Department of Public Safety. Strain spoke with MPB's Ezra Wall.

Segment 2: Teachers have long debated the best way to get students to absorb lessons. Whether it’s learning ABC's or Trigonometry, there is no definitive answer on the best way to engage students. In the conclusion of our week-long series on Good Teaching, The Southern Education Desk’s John Hughes asked a well-regarded Louisiana educator to talk about what works for him.

Segment 3: Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Blue Springs, near Tupelo, is now working at full capacity. Six month's ago its first Toyota -- made in Mississippi -- rolled off the production line. Reason enough for MPB's Sandra Knispel to check in and chat with David Copenhaver, vice president for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi, about jobs, suppliers and expansion plans.

Segment 4: As budget cuts continue, volunteer organizations are forced to work harder than ever to meet the needs of disadvantaged Mississippians. MPB's Daniel Cherry reports how several groups are combining efforts to serve more residents.

Segment 5: We have reviews of new movies that premiere this weekend.
