Monday, April 30: State Budget

Air date 04/30/12

After working through the weekend, state lawmakers have approved a new budget for the fiscal year that begins July first. Lawmakers spend parts of Saturday and Sunday voting on more than 100 spending bills ahead of a deadline today. Joining us with more on next year's State Spending is MPB Capitol Reporter Jeffrey Hess.

It was an emotional day of remembrance in Smithville one year after an EF5 tornado ravaged the small town in northeast Mississippi, killing sixteen. MPB’s Sandra Knispel was at Saturday’s ceremony and filed this report.

Twenty-year old William West is a store clerk at the hardware store in Smithville. Look closely and you'll notice several long scars across his head. A year ago, when the EF-5 tornado leveled large parts of the small town in northeast Mississippi, West found himself, quite literally, in the eye of the storm. With the sounds of rebuilding the hardware store in the background, he tells MPB's Sandra Knispel what happened, and how he's still struggling to return to some form of normalcy.
