Friday, April 20: Spill Anniversary

Air date 04/20/12

Today marks two years since the Deepwater Horizon well was destroyed in the Gulf of Mexico. The now-infamous oil spill that resulted has been an environmental and economic disaster for much of the Gulf Coast in four states. The Gulf Islands National Seashore was particularly hard-hit. Gulf Islands Superintendent Dan Brown says there is still a lot of cleanup work left to do.

Then, this weekend Mississippi's only professional opera company will take the stage to perform Donizetti's "The Elixir of Love." Jay Dean is the artistic director of the Mississippi Opera. He joins us to talk about the famous opera, and why he is setting the scene in the American West.

Also, Alex - whose last name we are not using - is a college student in Mississippi. He's also an undocumented immigrant. Legislation called "The Dream Act" has been introduced in Congress the last couple of years, but has failed each time. The act would allow certain undocumented immigrants to gain legal status through academic achievement. Also joining us is Sara Del Castillo from the Millsaps College student chapter of Amnesty International.

Plus film critic Anita Modak-Truran.
