Wed, Dec. 19th: Safe Schools

Air date 12/19/12

1 - President Barack Obama today will offer some details of his pledge to do whatever he can to safeguard the nation's children from another shooting rampage. Aides say the President will assign Vice President Joe Biden to lead the effort. The administration wants to move quickly in formulating a response to Friday's massacre in Connecticut.  Dr. Chester Quarles is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Mississippi. He tells MPB's Ezra Wall schools are more safe now than in years past.

2 - An investigation by MPB's Southern Education Desk has found that the committee appointed by the Mississippi Department of Education to evaluate sex education programs for the state’s school made mistakes in the approval process.  In part two of our investigative series on sex education, MPB's Annie Gilbertson reports that most members of the committee did not have the expertise necessary to complete the job accurately.

We’ve digitized all materials retrieved through Freedom of Information requests, including the review committee’s score sheets. To see which programs were inaccurately approved, visit SouthernEducationDesk.org

With Christmas and New Year's just around the corner, the hectic holiday season is almost at an end. Joining us with some ideas to help you hold on to your sanity is Christina Torti, Psychologist Associate at the Mississippi State Hospital. She tells MPB's Ezra Wall why the season of Joy is so stressful for so many.
