Fri, March 15: Pre-K and Crime

Air date 03/15/13

Law enforcement officials and others gathered in Biloxi yesterday to voice support for a State-funded pre-kindergarten program. The effort was spearheaded by the Fight Crime: Invest in Kids organization. They say high-quality early childhood education can cut crime in the long term. Joining us with more is Biloxi Assistant Police Chief Rodney McGilvary.

Emily Southerton was a Teach for America teacher in Jackson. While she was working with some of her students, she saw how using poetry helped them express some pretty complex thoughts about the confusing world around them.  So, when her term was over she approached TFA about funding a new idea called the Poet Warriors Project. Emily joins us now to talk about the project, and why she's back in Mississippi.

Dr. John Kiss is Dean of the graduate school and professor of biology at the University of Mississippi. He is also the lead investigator for NASA's latest experiment, aimed at determining whether edible plants might be grown on Mars and the moon. His seed samples were aboard a rocket that launched last week from Cape Canaveral, headed to the International Space Station. MPB's Sandra Knispel spoke with Dr. Kiss about his experiment, which is part of NASA's Fundamental Space Biology program.
