Mon, Jan. 7th: Education Agenda

Air date 01/07/13

1 - Tomorrow lawmakers will converge on the State Capitol for the opening of the 2013 legislative session. As always, education will be the subject of much discussion and debate as legislators decide on MAEP funding and charter schools. Dr. Lynn House is Interim State Superintendent of Education. She tells MPB's Jeffrey Hess about her department's legislative requests.

2 - Every two seconds someone in our country needs blood, according to the Red Cross. On the other hand, every pure blood donation is separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma. So each donor could help up to three recipients. Joining us with more is Tony Bahou  from Mississippi Blood Services.

3 - Many well-meaning people will include "Spend more time volunteering" on their list of New Year's resolutions. But with so many worthwhile projects, where do you start?  The United Way of South Mississippi is offering a way to get the ball rolling. It's a program called "30 Ways in 30 Days." Volunteers who register through the United Way of South Mississippi's website will have ideas for volunteer service for every day of the month. John Hosey is with the United Way. He says his organization is all about matching areas of need with community resources.
