About Mississippi Edition

In a continued effort to provide relevant, interesting and engaging programming to our state audience of listeners, the News and Public Affairs Department of MPB recently launched a new weekday, 30 minute program. “Mississippi Edition,” hosted by Karen Brown, airs weekday mornings at 8:30 and features, not only the latest news of the day, but the opportunity to delve into some of those news stories with the people who are making the news themselves.

We’ll tackle everything from state government to education….from Medicaid to social security. Plus we’ll tell you about little towns and the big cities. We’ll even introduce you to famous native sons and your not so famous neighbors.

So tune in to MPB Think Radio weekday mornings at 8:30 to hear Mississippi Edition. And please keep checking back to our website as we continue to add new and engaging content. Thank you for listening and supporting Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

Karen Brown

Born and raised in New Jersey, Karen Brown earned a degree in Speech/Theatre from Glassboro State College in 1978, then an M.A. in Theatre from the University of South Dakota in 1981. She lived in South Dakota for the next 17 years, directing, acting and managing a community theater before entering the Radio News field. It was in Rapid City, SD that Karen worked for stations KTOQ and KIQK, owned by NBC’s Tom Brokaw. She served as News Director and co-host of a morning radio program.

Rapid City is where Karen met her husband, Ron, and where their two sons, Casey and Jesse were born. A nine-year stay in west central Illinois followed and a job co-hosting a 2-hour morning news/talk radio/cable program at WGEM TV/AM/FM. While living in Illinois, Karen also wrote a biweekly newspaper column on a variety of issues and topics for the Quincy-Herald Whig.

The Browns moved to Columbus, Mississippi in 2006 before settling in the Jackson area the next summer so Karen could accept a job with MPB to host “Mississippi Edition” and local segments of “Morning Edition.” Husband, Ron, serves as the Arts Reporter for MPB News as well as Host and Executive producer of the weekly television show on visual artists called “Southern Expressions.”

Lisa Michie

Lisa Michie was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and is the extremely proud parent of 18 year old son Taylor and 13 year old daughter Katharine.

In the mid 90’s Lisa and family to Asheville, North Carolina, where she was bit by the broadcasting bug. It was there that Lisa cut her teeth in radio as a dj for a classic rock and a country station.

It was love.

They relocated to Biloxi to be close to Lisa’s parents about 4 years ago, and she began working as a reporter for the Sun Herald and also at WLOX Television. If you do the math you will see it was just before Hurricane Katrina roared ashore.

The television station stayed on the air during the entirety of the hurricane, and Lisa was right in the thick of it. She is still amazed at the ferocity of the storm and in complete awe of being part of a team that was able to give out information that ultimately saved lives. While she is not happy in any way with the complete devastation, she is happy to have had the opportunity to see how Mississippians pulled together to help each other recover.

Lisa made the move upstate to Jackson to work for MPB in late 2007 as the Executive Producer of Mississippi Edition. She is the person behind the scenes that books the guests and writes those questions that Karen so ably asks. While her work at Mississippi Public Broadcasting is mainly off the air, occasionally you will hear her hosting special segments such as last summer’s “Grillicious” series.
