By 1953, school desegregation lawsuits had been filed in several states. Late that year, the president of the Mississippi NAACP, said that integrating the staunchly white University of Mississippi would be important. Medgar Evers volunteered for the challenge and formally applied for admission to law school. His rejection came nine months later—on a newly changed technicality.
