Medgar Evers’ pioneering civil rights activities caught the attention of Mississippi’s NAACP leaders. When they needed their first field secretary, they tapped him for the job. Evers opened his office in Jackson in January, 1954, the same week the White Citizen’s Council also opened its office. Evers’ duties were to investigate the racial incidents happening in Mississippi.
