Medgar Evers was murdered on June 12, 1963, in his driveway in Jackson, Mississippi. Born in the Jim Crow south, he was killed because he was trying to bring about change. Evers was the first NAACP Field Secretary in Mississippi. He strove for equal treatment of African Americans, for integrated schools and for the right of Negroes to vote.
