The man suspected of killing Medgar Evers was free for over 25 years. But Evers’ widow continually pressed for justice. In 1989, after Jackson’s newspaper, the Clarion Ledger, reported irregularities in the first trials, the case was reopened. In 1994 Byron de la Beckwith was finally convicted of first degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison.
