In the years following Medgar Evers’ murder, things began to change. In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act and in 1965, the Voting Rights Act. By 1967 nearly one third of Mississippi ‘s Negroes were registered to vote. Gradually—and not without resistance—schools, theatres, restaurants, parks, and even the police force integrated.
