“Sacrifice for Human Dignity.” That was the name Medgar Evers gave to a boycott of segregated businesses on Jackson’s Capitol Street. This was in 1960. The protesters held signs and wore clothes and marched—and were arrested. In the fall, they also boycotted Negro Day at the state fair. This was dangerous for the protestors but it was even more dangerous for Medgar Evers as their leader.
