Medgar Evers’ casket traveled by train to Washington, DC. He was buried at Arlington on June 19. Roy Wilkins, the executive director of the NAACP, spoke. “Medgar Evers believed in his country; it now remains to be seen whether his country believes in him.” At the White House the next morning, President Kennedy signed a draft copy of the Civil Rights Act.
